Workshop 2

First steps: Data collection and Transcribing Multimodal and Mediated Interactions

The second workshop of the PlaceME network will take place in Stockholm on 10-11 May 2007.
Themes
The second workshop will focus on bringing together doctoral students and some scholars across the Nordic and Baltic region to explore and practise how to take the first steps in doing data collection, transcription and analysis from different methodological standpoints in relation to the core themes of the network, namely, place, mediated discourse and embodied interaction.

The format of the workshop will consist of presentations and data explorations lead by Professor Lorenza Mondada (Université Lumière Lyon2, France), as well as opportunities for data sessions by participants, small working group breakouts and reflections on methodology. We will also do some practical fieldwork.

Additionally, we will endeavour to discuss the nature of the PlaceME network and what we share in common, but also our differences, as well as the key issues that need to be resolved to facilitate a synergy effect over and above our diverse approaches.

We expect the workshop will be attended by 30-35 persons. The network especially welcomes doctoral students from the Nordic and Baltic region who are members of the network to apply to attend (see below).

Participants will be required to engage in some preparatory reading and exercises before the workshop event itself.

Dates and timing
We expect that participants will arrive during the evening of Wednesday 9th May (no dinner is provided). After two full days of activities participants will leave the morning of Saturday 12th May (after breakfast). Note that an extra day of data sessions will take place on Saturday (provisionally between 9-15) for those who wish to participate, but if one wishes to stay an extra night that is not paid for by the network. Two full days with meals and three nights accommodation are provided.
Location
The workshop is located on two beautiful boats by the southern shore of lake Mälaren in the centre of Stockholm. The hotel accommodation is on a boat called LogInn Hotel. The workshop will take place on an adjacent conference boat. The check-in time for the LogInn Hotel is from 14:00-23:00 on Wednesday.

Here is a map to help you locate the boat in central Stockholm. Click on the map for more detailed information.

How to get to the workshop:

  • You get from the Arlanda airport to Cityterminalen in the centre of Stockholm by the coach called "Flygbussarna" (95 SEK single, 175 SEK return, discount with international student card)
  • At Cityterminalen, you get on the Subway, "T-bana" (about 24 SEK). choose the red line towards Liljeholmen. Get off at Mariatorget (exit Torkel Knutssonsgatan), turn right and follow that street down to the water where LogInn is located at Södermälarstrand Kajplats 16.
Schedule
Participants will be expected to collaborate on network activities as follows:
  • Thursday 10th: 8:00 - 21:00
  • Friday 11th: 8:00 - 18:00
  • More details soon

On Saturday 12th there will be an optional data session from 9:00-15:00 (at Stockholm University).

Grants
Grants will be available for PhD students (and a few scholars) in the Nordic and Baltic countries to participate in the workshops organised by the network. Please read the grant protocol to see if you qualify.
Applications
If you wish to attend the workshop, then there are two possibilities.
  1. You can apply to attend the workshop and to receive a grant for your travel costs (cheapest possible route). Accommodation and food at the conference site will be paid by the network.
  2. If you do not qualify for a grant, you can apply to attend, but you will have to pay for your own travel, accommodation and meals (there will be no participation fee). To give you an idea of prices: Accommodation and meals at the conference site (for 3 nights) is roughly 2000 SEK. Meals for 2 days with no accommodation is roughly 800 SEK. There are a limited number of places for this option.

The application form is online. Please fill out all the entries on the form to expedite the application process.

Please note that applications will be given priority according to the following criteria:

  1. Doctoral students from the Nordic/Baltic region
  2. Relevance of research to the network and workshop
  3. Quota according to each node/country

Also, over the three year period of funding, priority will be given to first timers (PlaceME newbies or PlaceMEbies).

If you would like more information about the workshop and participation requirements, then please contact Mathias Broth, the local organiser, or else use the contact form.

Deadline
The deadline for submission of applications for grants is 19th February 2007. After that date, all applications will be considered by the Coordination board. If you do apply for a grant, you will be informed shortly after this date. If you receive a travel grant, then please book your tickets as soon as possible. Applications to participate with self-financing (option 2 above) must also be submitted by the same date.
Credit
Doctoral students attending and participating in the workshop will receive 3 ECTS.
Reimbursement procedure
For those who attend and receive a travel grant, then you will need to follow closely the costs protocol for getting your travel costs reimbursed.
