Workshop 4

Know Your Place: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Discourses in Places, Spaces and On-the-Move

The fourth workshop of the PlaceME network will take place in just outside of Oulu on the Hailuoto Island (Shark Island!) on 5-6 June 2008. .
Themes
The fourth workshop will focus on bringing together doctoral students and some scholars across the Nordic and Baltic region from different methodological standpoints in relation to the core themes of the network, namely, place, space, region and mobility and their role in discourse and interaction.

It is our great pleasure to announce that Professor Anssi Paasi will give a lecture at the workshop. Anssi Paasi is a professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Oulu and he has done extensive work on place, space and region. Paasi has promised to give a talk on the Friday of the workshop.

The workshop will consist of data explorations lead by Pentti Haddington, Paul McIlvenny and Pirkko Raudaskoski. In addition, there will opportunities for data sessions for participants, group work, assignments, outdoor fieldwork, etc. The Hailuoto Island provides excellent outdoor facilities for fieldwork, for example. Participants will also be required to do some preparatory reading and exercises before the workshop event itself.

It is important to note that the final theme, the schedule, the program and the readings of the workshop will be planned and organized by those doctoral students who are accepted to the workshop. They will work in close collaboration with the workshop organisers.

We expect the workshop will be attended by 20 persons (maximum). The network especially welcomes doctoral students from the Nordic and Baltic region who are members of the network to apply to attend (see below).

Dates and timing
We expect that participants will arrive during the evening of Wednesday 4th June (no dinner is provided). The first evening and night will be spent in the city centre of Oulu. After early breakfast on Thursday morning we will meet up in the hotel lobby and drive to the Hailuoto Island. We will spend two full days with lots of exciting activities at the Luotokeskus activity centre. Participants will return on Friday evening to stay at the Hotel Scandic. Participants will leave the morning of Saturday 7th June (after breakfast). Two full days with meals and three nights of accommodation are provided.
Location
The workshop will take place in the Hailuoto Island (Shark Island) off-shore Oulu, at the Luotokeskus activity centre. The accommodation is also provided by the Luotokeskus centre (webcam).

For the first night (between Wednesday and Thursday) we have reserved rooms from Hotel Scandic, which is located at the very centre of Oulu.

Here is the general city map of Oulu.

And below is the exact location of Hotel Scandic where we stay on Wednesday night.

The organizers will pick up the participants from Hotel Scandic on Thursday morning after breakfast (8:00) and we will set out on the exciting trip towards the Shark Island (a 25-minute drive to a ferry, a 20-minute ferry ride and the final 20 minutes drive to the Luotokeskus activity centre). Everyone must assemble after breakfast otherwise you will be left behind! That means you must arrive on Wednesday.

Finnair and SAS fly to the Oulu Airport (SAS, Finnair). There is a regular bus connection (line 19) from the airport to the city centre of Oulu (there’s a bus stop just next to the hotel, see blue dots on the map). The bus ride takes about 30 minutes and busses run every 30 minutes (between 5.35AM – 4.50PM) and once an hour after 5PM.

Schedule
Participants will be expected to collaborate on network activities as follows:
  • Thursday 5th: 8:00 - 21:00
  • Friday 6th: 8:00 - 18:00
Grants
Grants will be available for PhD students (and a few scholars) in the Nordic and Baltic countries to participate in the workshops organised by the network. Please read the grant protocol to see if you qualify.
Applications
If you wish to attend the workshop, then there are two possibilities.
  1. You can apply to attend the workshop and to receive a grant for your travel costs (cheapest possible route). Accommodation and food at the conference site will be paid by the network.
  2. If you do not qualify for a grant, you can apply to attend, but you will have to pay for your own travel, accommodation and meals (there will be no participation fee). To give you an idea of prices: Accommodation and meals at the conference site (for 3 nights) is roughly 250 EURO. There are a limited number of places for this option.

The application form is online. Please fill out all the entries on the form to expedite the application process.

Please note that applications will be given priority according to the following criteria:

  1. Doctoral students from the Nordic/Baltic region
  2. Relevance of research to the network and workshop
  3. Quota according to each node/country

Also, over the three year period of funding, priority will be given to first timers (PlaceME newbies or PlaceMEbies).

If you would like more information about the workshop and participation requirements, then please contact Pentti Haddington, the local organiser, or else use the contact form.

Deadline
The new deadline for submission of applications for grants is 4th April 2008. After that date, all applications will be quickly considered by the Coordination board. If you do apply for a grant, you will be informed shortly after this date. If you receive a travel grant, then please book your tickets as soon as possible. Applications to participate with self-financing (option 2 above) must also be submitted by the same date.
Credit
Doctoral students attending and participating in the workshop will receive 3 ECTS.
Reimbursement procedure
For those who attend and receive a travel grant, then you will need to follow closely the protocol for getting your travel costs reimbursed. The deadline for reimbursement for this workshop is 1st August 2008. Please submit your claims form by that date otherwise you will not be reimbursed,
